This section contains information on Australian Government funding for local roads.
Funding for local road improvements in the financial years 2004-05 to 2008-09 comprises:
-
$1.48 billion under the AusLink Roads to Recovery Program;
-
$307.5 million under the Supplementary AusLink Roads to Recovery Program; and
-
$470.0 million under the AusLink Strategic Regional Program.
Under the Roads to Recovery Program, direct funding to local councils is distributed according to a formula based on population and road length set by the Local Government Grants Commissions in each state and the Northern Territory. Each council's Roads to Recovery allocation is fixed for the life of the program.
Annual Financial Assistance Grants for roads paid direct to local government total $581.2 million in 2008-09.
-
each state receives a fixed share of the grant, the share being set out in legislation;
-
each council's share of the grant is determined by the state's local government grants commission; and
-
the grants are untied (available to be used as the council determines).
